Chiller Types & its Working principle.

 Chiller :

The refrigeration machine that produces chilled water is referred to as a chiller. A chiller is a water cooled air-conditioning system that cools inside air, creating a more comfortable and productive environment.

Working principle of chilled water system.

1. Chillers circulate chilled water to air handler in order to transfer heat from air too water.

2. The water then returns to the evaporator side of the chiller where the heat is passed from the water to a liquid refrigerant.

3. The refrigerant leaves the evaporator enters the condenser side of the chiller where heat is transferred from the refrigerant to air/water side of the condenser where it is circulated toa an ACC/open cooling tower for the final removal of heat from the refrigerant as a liquid.

Basically, there are two types of chillers based upon the refrigeration Cycle:

1. Vapor compression chiller.

2.  Absorption refrigeration chiller.

Vapor compression chiller

1. Uses a compressor to move refrigerant around the system. Energy source for the compressor is an electric motor.
2.Vary by type of compressor such as reciprocating, scroll, screw, centrifugal
3.Lower initial cost.
4.In emergency situation , continues electricity required for electricity driven chillers.

Absorption Water chiller

1.Use heat to drive the refrigeration cycle.
2.Energy source are steam, hot water or burning oil or natural oil.
3.Higher initial cost due to additional cost of heat transfer tubes & absorbent
4.Minimal electricity needed for generator during emergency situations.
5.Wasted energy can be used to fuel an absorption chiller.
6.Application in co-generation system.
